VSU’s Model UN Team Excels at Virtual Competition

During the weekend of November 6th– 8th, the Valdosta State University Model UN team participated in the first ever virtual National Model UN conference. Over 60 teams participated in the event with teams plugging in and logging on from not only various parts of the United States but also China, Japan, France, and Ecuador. The VSU team, which consisted of 20 students, represented three countries in the online competition: Italy, the Czech Republic, and El Salvador. VSU’s team walked away with awards for all three representations. The students representing Italy and El Salvador received awards for “Honorable Delegation” while VSU’s Czech Republic team was recognized for the “Distinguished Delegation” award. Though already an impressive run, the VSU Model UN team did not stop there with students also celebrating two wins in the “Outstanding Position Paper” category. The two papers recognized were the “General Assembly 2nd Committee representing Italy” by Bob Greenbaum and Josh Campagna and the “United Nations Population Fund Committee representing the Czech Republic” by Alexis Smith and Norma Mendez Trujillo. Dr. Carol M. Glen, VSU’s Model UN Faculty Advisor, said “although the virtual format of the conference was challenging, the students adapted magnificently. I am very proud of what the team achieved, especially considering that this was the first Model UN conference of any kind for most of the students.”
